Phuket Airport / Taxi
Airport taxis and private transfers from Phuket Airport (HKT) to Patong, Phuket Town, Kata, Karon and the whole island. Phuket taxis are pricey and use fixed fares, so it pays to know the numbers, and to weigh up renting a car instead.
The taxi desks at Phuket Airport sell fixed fares to each destination, and there is a metered taxi rank that adds a ฿100 airport surcharge. Fares are high by Thai standards: expect about ฿800 to ฿1,000 to Patong and ฿1,000 to ฿1,200 to Kata. No booking is needed, but you pay cash and prices are non-negotiable at the counter.
A private transfer is booked online in advance at a fixed price, often a little below the airport taxi counter. The driver meets you at arrivals with a sign and takes you straight to your hotel. It is the most predictable choice for families, late arrivals and the longer runs to Kata, Karon or Rawai in the south.

Indicative fares from Phuket Airport in baht. Airport taxi fares are the fixed counter price; the transfer column is the pre-booked private price. Both are per car, not per person, and can rise at night and in high season.

For a single trip to your hotel, a fixed-fare taxi or a pre-booked transfer is simplest. But Phuket's beaches are spread out and taxis between them are expensive, with no metered street taxis to flag down. If you plan to move around, the maths quickly favours a car.
A no-deposit rental car from about ฿700 a day often costs less than two return airport taxis, and frees you from waiting for drivers or paying fixed fares every time you want to change beach. It is the reason many visitors to Phuket drive.
A fixed-fare airport taxi from Phuket Airport to Patong costs about ฿800 to ฿1,000 for the 40 km, 50-minute run. A metered taxi adds a ฿100 airport surcharge, and a pre-booked private transfer starts from about ฿750. All are per car, and prices rise at night.
Phuket has no cheap metered street taxis like Bangkok; airport and resort taxis use fixed fares set by local operators, which are high. That is why many visitors pre-book a transfer for the arrival and rent a car or use the Phuket Smart Bus to get around afterwards.
The Phuket Smart Bus runs from the airport down the west coast to Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai for a flat ฿100 fare. It is by far the cheapest option, but slow, with many stops and a journey of up to two hours to the southern beaches.
Yes. A private transfer from Phuket Airport is booked online at a fixed price, with the driver tracking your flight and waiting at arrivals with a sign even if you are delayed. It is the easiest choice for late arrivals and families with luggage.
If you plan to visit more than one or two beaches, yes. Phuket's fixed taxi fares add up fast, so a no-deposit rental car from about ฿700 a day often works out cheaper than a few airport taxi runs, and it goes wherever you want.
Most private transfer services at Phuket Airport can add a child or booster seat on request when you book. Fixed-fare airport taxis rarely carry child seats, so a pre-booked transfer is the safer choice for families.
